What is the WebQuest?
The webQuest is a site devoted to online treasure hunts, set up in August 2000 following the success of EchoQuest, a treasure hunt run by the Darlington (UK) morning newspaper, The Northern Echo, whose website attracted tens of thousands of hits when it put the clues on-line.

It is run by Jon Smith, creator of EchoQuest, and website designer Don Day. Jon works on a PC, Don on a Macintosh, and the biggest mystery is how they manage to communicate - but it's worked so far.

In return for a small entry fee contestants get passwords which allow them to read the clues.

All the entry fees go in prizes, so the more people who enter, the bigger the winnings. The aim is to attract enough entrants eventually to attract sponsors and advertisers, which would mean free entry into the treasure hunts. It might also mean that Jon and Don recoup some of the costs of setting up and maintaining the site, but it hasn't happened yet.

It's as simple as that. The clues aren't.

Past Quests
The first two ended on September 30th: An EasyQuest which featured the detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr John Watson in the Case of the Purloined Papers, and a tougher KillerQuest which posed a series of word-linked puzzles, Both went on line on September 9th 2000.

EasyQuest clues went online one day at a time, with prizes for the first correct entries drawn after the closing date, September 30th 2000.

KillerQuest clues all went up together, but you had to solve each one before you could access the next, and the prizes went to the first contestants to solve them all

Future Quests?
More quests, easy and hard, are planned, starting on 29th October 2000.

When you register for the KillerQuest you will be sent the introduction with an initial clue to solve, which will get you to the online clues. The rest of the clues and the first of the EasyQuest clues will be available on this site from October 29th 2000
ENTRY FEES
Our initial survey, which you all so kindly filled in, shows that a lot of you prefer to enter the easyQuest only so the fairest way to apportion the prizes is to restructure the entry fee.

For the webQuest 2 this is the format.

ENTRY TO BOTH QUESTS................................................................... £6.00
ENTRY TO THE EASYQUEST ONLY (giving 2 chances at the draw)..... £6.00

The Credit card payment method is slightly higher in order to cover the collectors commission without reducing the prizes.

HOW TO ENTER THE NEXT QUESTS
OFFLINE - cheque via snail mail
ONLINE - plastic via Kagi secure server
